by Vasil KolevI wanted to do nothing today, but it turned out a bit different…
Firstly I went out and bought a long power lengthener, and I moved doom to my room, and I ran an ethernet cable, so now I can work easy from my desk (here are some photos). I think the room looks better this way…
After that, while cleaning up other stuff, I installed a cross-compiling environment, to compile alpha’s kernel, because I’ve grown tired from a hour long compilations. It was easy, following the instructions from http://linux.bytesex.org/cross-compiler.html, the only serious difference was the addition of –enable-languages=c in the options of gcc’s configure script, because I didn’t want to compile the strange stuff like gcj. I installed all the stuff in /usr/cross, not in /usr/local, to know what to delete, if I need to.
After that, because I lacked willingness to move the printer in my room, I set up the printing on the alpha (which was the primary reason for the kernel’s recompilation, and I wanted to upgrade to 2.4.26). My previous attempts led to the hang-up of the machine at each attempt to print, but now it’s working perfectly, with options parport_pc irq=none. I could’ve tuned it a bit, but I don’t think that it will speed the printing a lot:)
Now I’m thinking about going out in the rain to the store, after which to lie down, and to finish reading Lukyanenko’s new book – “Emperor of the illusions”. Yesterday I finished “Starborne” by Silverberg, nicely written, but without any new or major ideas…
There’s an interesting new film based on one of Lukyanenko’s books – “Night watch” (“Nochnoy dozor”), and there aren’t any subtitles for it… In the end I’ll learn russian, and I’ll even be able to read Strugatski in original…
