OpenFest 2006

by Vasil Kolev

This year’s OpenFest was really good – Marian, Hristina, Yovko and the rest of the known and unknown organizers and helpers (who I can’t remember, for which I apologize) had set up everything perfectly, so I can honestly say that was the calmest OpenFest I’ve been to :) The halls were nice, the place was easily accessible, the lectures and the guests were really good (it was worthy speaking with Branden Robinson) and so it was full with fun occasions like:
1) The power went out for about 30 minutes Saturday while we were in the pub, so we drank in a romantic surroundings (to make things easier, Brandon tied a small flashlight to his fork and kept eating his salad)
2) One of Bogomil’s lectures included a bottle roaming in the audience…
(additions, anyone?:) )

And because it will be easier, I’ll just tell the problems, the rest was good :) :
1) A few times we had problems connecting some laptop to the projectors. Next year this has to be tested in advance.
2) The entry hall was too small.
3) Going to one of the halls through another or through the balconies wasn’t nice/convenient.
4) Next year we’ll use optics and will stop with the damn roofs.
5) For the LPI exam nobody had thought in advance, so there was no place to write normally.
6) It was cold, I wonder if we should move this event to the summer…
7) We could’ve used a camera-men team.

And of course, I gave one of my worst lectures – with not a lot of information, done in the last moment and in front of a lot of people (they had overflown the hall…). The presentations is available in ODP format and in PDF format.

The video recordings from the event are encoded, in a few days I’ll do the cutting and will upload them.
