2009-03-16 Soulfly

Soulfly came for the fourth time in Bulgaria and I finally found some time to go see them…

The concert was in Universiada, which seemed small for this – there were a lot of seats and not enough (at least for this concert) space in front of the stage. The sound was ok, but about that – later.

The concert started with Artery, they played some songs and got out. They were followed by an absolutely tragic group (looking at the poster, should be Subscribe), which cooled down the audience and were booed a bit. The third group was Senser, which were pretty interesting (I’ll look for their stuff), but they definitely weren’t for this concert (and had a hard time after the tragedies before them. The warm-up was finished by Incite, who turned out to be pretty good (their singer is the step-son of Max Cavalera).
(the thing with four warm-up acts was horrible. I’d play a bit more to have only Artery as a warming act).

After which (and some waiting) Soulfly came on the stage and then the hall started to feel small (especially in front of the stage). There wasn’t even a lot of mosh, the people were really close (the crowd was just moving left and then right). They did a lot of their good stuff, and also Refuse/Resist (which is one of the songs that have to be heard live, if not by the old Sepultura, then by Soufly), and their guitarist (Mark Rizzo) was incredible.

One thing annoyed me a bit in the sound – when you turn up everything to the maximum and use a guitar with distortion on it, a lot gets lost (which doesn’t happen for example with Apocalyptica). I wonder how this concert would’ve sounded with a bit more equipment and not full power on it.

And also, Max Cavalera really reminds me of Djino Banana (the singer of Kultur Shock), especially by form. I wonder what would happen with them both on the same stage :)
