I’m beat…

Today we again fought some stuff in the project, and in one moment I felt the urge to rip off some chips and rewrite their firmware, I can’t understand why do some people think that a mac address is resolved once, and then you don’t use the arp protocol…

After that we gathered in “Halbite” (“The tankards”) to finish discussing openfest, and we’ll do this at the IBB at wednesday, too (it will be in “Krivoto” again, most of the people really liked it :) ).

I bought two books for reading today – “The Da Vinci code” by Dan Brown and the second part of “The tower of the green angel” by Tad Williams, but I probably won’t be able to read anything from them, I’m really sleepy…

Днес пак борихме разни неща около проекта, и в един момент ми се прищя да изтръгна няколко чипа и да им пренапиша firmware, не мога да си обясня на кого може да му хрумне идеята, че mac адреса се намира един път, и оттам нататък arp протокола не се ползва…

След това се събрахме в “Халбите” да дообсъдим OpenFest, нещата вървят добре, и ще дообсъждаме на бирата в сряда (която пак ще е в “Кривото”, заведението се хареса на повечето хора :) ).

Аз си взех две книжки за четене – “Шифърът на Леонардо” на Дан Браун и втора част от “Кулата на зеления ангел” на Тад Уилиамс, но вероятно няма да мога да прочета нищо от тях, адски ми се спи…

Today I cleaned up my patch for gaim, to work with cyrillic. Now it looks like nicer, because they’ve moved the processing of the incoming messages in a separate function. What’s left is to find the documentation on the internal function that can check if message is valid utf8, and to use it, that will make it even shorter :) Whomever want it, can download it from https://vasil.ludost.net/patches/gaimdiff10.

How it works, in a few words: in the function gaim_plugin_oscar_convert_to_utf8 at the check of the encoding in the parameters of the message I’ve added a check if the message itself is pure UTF8 (isUTF8()). The other thing is the change of the default encoding (that should be a configuration option).

I slept through the rest of the day, and I intend to go to sleep again in the next few hours.

Днес си оправих patch-а за gaim да показва нормално кирилица. Сега е доста по-чист, понеже са изместили обработката на съобщенията в една отделна функция. Остава да намеря документацията и да използвам вътрешната фукнкция да проверявам за utf8 съобщения, и ще стане съвсем кратък :) Може да се свали от https://vasil.ludost.net/patches/gaimdiff10.

Накратко как работи: в функцията gaim_plugin_oscar_convert_to_utf8 в проверката на encoding-а от параметрите на съобщението е добавена проверка дали и самото съобщение е utf8 (isUTF8()). Другото е промяната на default encoding-а на CP1251, вместо на ISO-8851-1 (това трябва да е конфигурационна опция май).

През останалата част от деня спах, и смята малко по-късно пак да си легна.

I got up early again – I can’t sleep well when I’ve drunk the evening before…

The day consisted mostly of patching the business application, to make it behave like an unix daemon. I set heartbeat to start/stop it, and now everything is working great, there’s only one simple thing to be fixed, with the arp cache.

In the evening I went to the anime meeting, which went well – we circled for a hour, before we were able to find a pub to contain us, and in the end we sat at the open part of “O!Shipka”, and it was really nice that there were big umbrellas over the tables, because it was raining. I stayed for a while, we told each other a nice quantity of dirty jokes, and then I went home.

For a finish of the evening I watched Ghost in the shell 2 – Innocence, an incredibly beautiful movie (but the translation sucked, I should find another version). It’s hard to understand, and I’ll probably need to watch it one-two more times, before I fully understand it, but I’m sure that it will be worthy :)

Пак станах рано – не мога да си отспивам, като пия…

Денят мина в дописване на бизнес приложението, да се държи като нормален unix-ки демон. Описах го и в heartbeat-а, и нещата работят много добре, остана една дреболия с arp cachе да се оправи.

Вечерта бях на anime срещата, която мина прилично – около час обикаляхме да си намерим кръчма, после едвам си намерихме места отвън в “О!Шипка”, и добре че имаше чадъри, че валеше. Аз постоях малко, разказахме си едно прилично количество мръсни вицове, и се прибрах.

Като край на вечерта гледах Ghost in the shell 2 – Innocence, невероятно красив филм (но превода му куцаше ужасно, смятам да си потърся още една версия). Не е лесен за разбиране, и вероятно ще ми трябват още едно-две гледания, за да го разбера докрай, но и те ще си струват :)

This deserves an separate posting – Boyan, congratulations on your engagement :) Looks like everything nice has happened to you, so I have no idea what more to wish for you :)

It’s great to work with nice people – it wasn’t enough that they ported their software for linux (for a month and a half wit the testing), but they even implement the features I request, like daemonization, pid file writing, using syslog and such… I just feel sorry that I didn’t have a part in writing the contract with them, to get a copy of the source for auditing – it would be nice to read, from what I saw I think that they’ve written it really good…

Another important thing turned out to be that we need the windows machine only in special cases, and we don’t care about it in the normal course of work – this removed the second SPF (single point of failure) that we had, and now only the central device is such, so we might need some spare parts for it (which are a bit pricey).

Lora’s birthday followed – congratulations, I hope all your dreams come true :) We went drinking in the “Shedyovrite” (“The masterpieces”) in Student city, and because I got the explanation that it’s shameful to drink beer there, I left Velin with the choice of my drinks – which had the direct consequence of not having two drinks in the same color, and I still have no idea what have I drunk (but if I have a headache in the morning, there will be a lot of swearing at him). We had a really good time, even though some people were late, and I wen home on foot (Velin went home earlier, because he didn’t have a lot of sleep in the last week, and was about to start snoring on the table).

The walk was really good, I wasn’t even breathing really heavy, even though I walked for a half a hour with my relatively fast tempo – I should do this exercise more often :)

Това заслужава отделен posting – Бояне, честито сгодяване :) Така като гледам, всичко най-хубаво ти се е случило, така че не знам какво да ти пожелая още :)

Хубаво е да работиш със свестни хора – не стига, че заради нас си port-наха софтуера за linux (за месец и половина, с тестването), ами и като им поискам някой feature, го дописват – например програмите да ги демонизират, да си пишат pid файл, да ползват syslog … Жалко само, че не съм участвал в писането на договора с тях, да измисля начин да ни дадат копие от source, за да го разгледам – по малкото, което видях, мисля, че са го написали много добре…

Друго важно нещо се оказа, че windows машината е нужна само при специални действия, и не е важна за нормалната работа на системата – това директно премахна второто SPF (single point of failure), което имахме, и сега остана само централното устройство, за което може би ще се вземат малко резервни части (които са бая скъпи).

Последва рождения ден на Лора – честито, да ти се сбъднат желанията :) Пихме в “Шедьоврите” в Студентски град, и понеже ми обясниха, че там е срамно да пия бира, оставих Велин да ми избира питиетата – което се изрази в това, че не пих две с един и същи цвят, и още не съм на ясно какво пих (но ако на сутринта ме боли глава, ще го наругая с пълна сила). Прекарахме много добре, въпреки че някои хора закъсняха, и най-накрая аз се прибрах пеша (Велин си тръгна по-рано, понеже не беше спал, и се опита да захърка на масата).

Разходката ми дойде много добре, даже не се задъхах особено, въпреки че вървях около час и половина с бързото си темпо – трябва по-често да го правя това упражнение :)

I’m feeling in shape again :)

Today was a killing day. Most of it consisted in making some software to run, modifying the network, moving machines, cables and stuff, pulling out eeproms with wrong firmware, and a lot of other stuff… The technician, that was sent to install the software and make the strange central piece of hardware work turned out to be a nice and smart person (and killed all my prejudices about the people in Turkey :) ). In short, the day until 19:00 was really exhausting.

On the way home I met a friend, that I haven’t seen for a few months, and that was a beam of happiness in my whole day, we spent 15 minutes in a conversation, then I had to run home, to print some things, and go to “Tukan” for the discussion of the network security course.

The three hours there almost drove me crazy, we managed to discuss the summary of the course and clean it up, despite the efforts of EXo and flipflop to do the most idiotic things imaginable, and the lot of off-topic conversations. A while ago I sent all the recorded things from the meeting, and in the moment I feel the urge to catch up on sleep, to be able to get up tomorrow at 9:30, and to be at the project at 11, to continue the installation.

And even so, such pressure makes me feel alive again…

Чувствам се във форма :)

Днес беше скапващ ден. Премина основно в подкарване на софтуер по проекта, пренареждане на мрежата, местене на машини, кабели и други подобни, с вадене на eeprom-и с грешен firmware, и с какво ли не още… Техничаря, който е изпратен да инсталира софтуера и да подкара странното централно парче хардуер, се оказа много свестен и умен човек (и ми изтрепа предразсъдъците, които имах за турците :) ). Изобщо деня до около 19:00 беше адски изтощителен.

По пътя към вкъщи срещнах една приятелка, която не бях виждал от няколко месеца, и това се оказа светъл лъч в целия ми ден, прекарахме 15 минути в разговор, след което трябваше да побързам, за да мога да разпечатам няколко основни неща, и да ходя към “Тукан” за обсъждането на мрежовата сигурност.

Трите часа там ме побъркаха, успяхме да обсъдим конспекта и да го изчистим, въпреки старанията на EXо и flop-а да правят простотии, и многото off-topic разговори. Преди малко пратих по пощата основните записани неща, и в момента изпитвам остра нужда да се наспя, за да мога утре да стана в 9:30, и до 11 да съм на място да продължим инсталацията.

И все пак, такова натоварване най-накрая ме кара да се чувствам жив…

I almost forgot to blog.

Today I picked up the microphone for testing how will it record the Network security lectures at FMI, and for now the things I’m sure are that I’ll have to upgrade to ALSA, to be able to do it, and that the input on the laptop sucks, adds noise, so I’ll have to think of something…

We celebrated Bobson’s birthday – with drinking, pizza, cake, books, and a lot of fun conversations (and Alexander Shopov fell asleep on the couch :) ). Especially funny was the discussion about the book “Problems of the sexual psychopathology”… I took some thing to read from him (old and classical) to have something in bulgarian to read.

And in the morning I found out that the install would be tomorrow, not today (the guy was arriving this evening), and they had the idea to start from 9:30 – sick people! I can barely get up at 9:30… I convinced them to start at 11, which is barely achievable.

За малко да забравя да блогна.

Днес взех микрофона за проба да видим как ще се получат записите на мрежовата сигурност във ФМИ, и за момента открих, че минимум трябва да upgrade-на до alsa, за да мога да го правя като хората. Освен това, изглежда входа на notebook-а е гаден, и добавя шум, та се чудя как ще го направим точно…

Отпразнувахме рождения ден на Бобсън – с пиене, пица, торта, книги, и всякакви забавни разговори (а Сашо Шопов се изложи, и заспа на дивана :) ). Особено весело беше обсъждането на книгата “Проблеми на сексуалната психопатология”… Взех си няколко неща за четене (все стари и класически), та да имам четиво на български…

А сутринта се оказа, че не днес щяла да е инсталацията, а утре (човека просто пристигал днес вечерта), и имаха идеята да е от 9:30 – болни хора! Аз в 9:30 едвам отлепям… Успях да ги убедя да почнем от 11, което пак ще е малко трудно, но поне е по-лесно постижимо.

“Ilium” is a great book, on par with the “Hyperion” cycle. I couldn’t stop reading it, just finished it, and have no idea how will I get up at 9 :) According to the author’s site, the manuscript for the second part will be finished this month, so with some luck in 6 months I could be reading it, too :)

“Илион” е велика книга, на нивото на цикъла за “Хиперион”. Не можах да се спра, и я прочетох, как ще стана към 9, не ми е ясно :) Според сайта на автора, ръкописът на втората част ще бъде завършен този месец, така че с малко повече късмет след 6 месеца може да чета и нея :)

Nothing special. Tomorrow I’ll have to get up early, we’re starting the installation of the business software of the project with the developers, it will be a fun day.

I’ve taken my monitor back from maintenance. It’s great to use it again, not the small one of the notebook…

Нищо особено. Утре трябва да стана рано, започваме да инсталираме бизнес софтуера по проекта, заедно с разработчиците, ще е забавен ден.

Прибрах си монитора от ремонт. Страхотно е пак да съм си на него, а не на малкия notebook…

I survived.

I, chervarium and avatarbg spent a night in drinking and talks about linguistics, mathematics, genetics and hand-writing (and a lot of their subtopics). Good things that we had paper and tools to write on it :)

I gave a present to chervarium – a second grade textbook on mathematics, to make it easier for him to explain complex things to us :)

I bought “Ilium” by Dan Simmons, to see how good is it…

Оцелях.

Аз, chervarium и avatarbg изкарахме една вечер в пиене и разговори на тема лингвистика, математика, генетика и краснопис (да не говорим за купчината подтеми). Добре, че имахме хартия и инструменти за писане :)

Подарих на chervarium учебник по математика за втори клас, като ни обяснява сложни неща, да го прави на по-разбираем език :)

Купих си “Илион” на Дан Симънс, да видим доколко е добра…
