Мразя ранното ставане. Едвам отлепих за да стигна навреме за пресконференцията, и добре, че бях навил и Недялков да дойде, че да изговори разните дълги пред-журналистически приказки, аз никога не съм ги умеел. В крайна сметка добре се получи…

След това минах през проекта, за няколко финални документални дреболии, прибрах се вкъщи, четох малко от Quicksilver и заспах. Сега съм станал за малко, мисля да почета, и да спя, че утре трябва да довърша няколко машини.

I feel sleepy the whole day, and I have no idea why…

Today I didn’t get to setting up some other server – at adsys the last thing they needed was the itanic and the xeon that I configured as gateway to generate noise, so I just make a map of the ports and vlans, and configured the switch (to be noted – the configuration of the switch through a web interface is a stupid idea, and just begs for something like “I just cut the branch I was sitting on”).

At some moment Ogi called (who was mentioned at slashdot these days, because of the patch he’s written for Hurd :) ), to tell me that because of the last brownouts at FMI zver didn’t boot – the bios of one of the raid controllers got messed up, and was giving problems with its logical drive. In the end one going through the bios solved the problem (I had remotely decided that there was some kind of other problem, and asked Ogi not to touch the bios but it turned out that I was wrong).

And I have second drive for my raid, and right in the moment it’s rebuilding. It was a bit strange procedure to add it, because until now I had one drive in JBOD, so firstly at adsys I had a RAID1 array made on two drives, got one of them, to have an array in degraded mode, then copied the old one onto it, and then rebuilt the array

Most of the time I was having a nap on the couch, until Velin (who has something really evil in him, when it comes to me sleeping on the couch) called to ask something, and woke me up. I understand him when he comes home, and wants to sleep there, but the remote kicking out of the couch I can’t accept…

Tomorrow I’ll have to get up early, there is a press conference for the expo, part of which is the hack contest. Who has decided for these things to be in the morning, what’s the problem for it to be at two in the afternoon..

Цял ден ми се спи, и идея си нямам защо…

Днес не стигнах до правенето на съврър – в adsys последното, което им трябваше, беше да им бучат на главата едновременно itanic-а и xeon-а, който направих за gateway, за това само направих една схема на vlan-ите и настроих switch-а (да се отбележи – настройката на switch през web интерфейс е глупава работа, и плаче за изпълнения от типа ‘отрязах си клона, на който седях’).

По някое време ми се обади Оги (който наскоро го споменаха и в slashdot, около кръпката, която написа за Hurd – а той още не е почерпи :) ), да ми каже, че около последните токови удари във ФМИ zver-а не е запалил – bios-а на единия raid контролер се бил объркал, и давал проблем с логическия си диск. В крайна сметка едно минаване през bios-а решило проблема (аз отдалечено бях решил, че има друг проблем, и бях помолил Оги да не пипа по bios-а, но се оказа, че не съм бил прав).

Аз вече имам втори диск за raid-а си, и точно в момента върви инициализацията. Беше малко шантава процедурата с добавянето му, понеже досега бях с един диск в JBOD, та трябваше първо да се направи още в adsys един масив от два диска, да ми се даде единия, т.е. да имам един масив в деградирал режим, да копирам стария диск в/у новия, и след това да пусна rebuild на масива.

През по-голямата част от тая операция аз дремах на дивана, докато Велин (в когото има нещо много зло, когато стане въпрос за моето спане на дивана) ми звънна по някакъв въпрос, и ме разбуди. Разбирам като се е прибрал, и иска да спи там, ама дистанционното изритване от дивана не мога да го приема…

Утре трябва да отлепя рано, има пресконференция на тема изложението, част от което ще е hack contest-а. Кой ги прави тия неща сутринта, какво лошо има в това да е в 2 следобед например …

Today I configured the first server for the hack contest – this one will be gateway… On it I tried shaping with HTB for the first time, and it turned out to be really easy, not like the horrors of CBQ. All was well, the machine was nice and fast, bud noisy as hell. And when I remember that tomorrow I’ll have another one to roar – a really noisy Itanium2 – I’m thinking about buying earplugs.

Turned out that the new Debian installer is great for network boot – it was easy with the sparc for the openfest, it turned out to be really easy with this machine too (Intel serverboard, with PXE).

There are some additions to the hack contest rules, mostly the network topology (every team and every server have their own VLAN).

I’ll sleep through the rest of the day of the students’ alcoholism. I have something good for reading – the second part of the Malazan book of the fallen – a good fantasy (Quicksilver makes me really sleepy, and is on the queue right now).

Направих първия сървър за hack contest-а – този ще бъде gateway… На него за пръв път правих shape-ване с HTB, и се оказа доста лесно и изчистено, за разлика от ужаса, който е CBQ. Всичко добре, бърза и хубава беше машината, само да не издаваше такъв звук, едвам я изтраях. А като си помисля, че утре освен тоя на главата ще ми бучи един още по-шумен Itanium2, ми се иска да си купя тапи за уши.

Оказа се, че новия Debian-ски инсталатор е страхотен за boot-ване по мрежа – лесно беше със sparc-а за openfest, много лесно се оказа и за тая машина (Intel serverboard, с PXE).

Има малко добавки в правилата на hack contest-а, по-точно топологията на мрежата (всеки участник и всеки сървър си имат собствен VLAN).

Остатъка от деня на студентския алкохолизъм мисля да го проспя. Поне имам нещо приятно за четене – втора част на Малазанска книга на мъртвите – едно доста добро фентъзи (Quicksilver-а ми действа адски приспиващо, и съм го оставил на изчакване).

It’s mostly servers these days, yesterday the zver, today the ones for the hack contest…

Last night we were answering students’ questions, and I found out something interesting – that libpcap can’t tell if a packet is incoming or outgoing from the interface. Strange, I thought that tcpdump (which is based on guess what) can do it.

I feel more and more sleepy when I go home, especially last night, we had dinner at Krivoto, and I drank a bock beer. I’m getting old :)

And a happy holiday to all the students, don’t get to the reanimation :)

Тия дни ми върви основно на сървъри, вчера zver-а, днес за hack contest-а…

Снощи отговаряхме на въпроси на студенти, и открих нещо интересно – че libpcap не може да каже дали даден пакет е входящ или изходящ от машината. Странна работа, аз защо си мислех, че tcpdump (който познайте на какво се базира) го може.

Все повече ми се спи, като се прибера, особено снощи, след като вечеряхме в Кривото, и ударих една тъмна бира. Остарявам :)

А, и честит празник на всички студенти, не стигайте до реанимацията и изтрезвителното :)

Today FSA’s server arrived, we brought it into the room, linked it, I did a basic installation (there were some minor problems, like not having a driver for the RAID controllers in the debian kernel), and I left the machine to finish installing it when I have time over ssh. I named it zver (beast) – it really weights a lot, and it’s big :) Here are some photos.

After that with Velin, Lora and Sve ate a dinner in XXL at Studentski grad (which was great, I hadn’t eaten anything through the day), and I helped Sve with his VPN settings, so he can now use his net connection.

Днес пристигна сървъра на ССС, качихме го в залата, закачихме го, направих една основна инсталация (имаше дребни проблеми, като например че в debian-ското ядро нямаше драйвер за RAID контролерите), и оставих машината там, за да я доинсталирам на спокойствие по ssh. Кръстих я zver – наистина си тежи 50 кила, и е бая голяма :) Ето и малко снимки.

След това с Велин и Лора и Све хапнахме в XXL в студентски град (което ми дойде много добре, понеже пак бях забравил да ям), и помогнах на Све да си оправи настройките за VPN-а, през който ползва net.

There’s something wrong with the Sunday. I managed to wash my old case, to eat, lied down to read a bit of Quicksilver, and fell asleep. Now I’m thinking about reading some more, and going to sleep again…

На неделята и има нещо. Успях да си изчистя старата кутия, да хапна, излегнах се да почета малко Quicksilver, и заспах. Смятам да почета още малко, и пак да спя…

I have no idea what was wrong with the day, but I felt really absent-minded.

In the morning me and Vlado Karavelov took my machine to his office, and tuned it, e.g. changed the case with a more quiet one, and replaced my two hard drives (36G 10K rpm SCSI and 160G IDE) with a 3ware RAID controller and a 250G SATA disk (I have another one planned, to make them two in RAID1). Not I can’t hear my machine, I can’t get used to it, I don’t even need to cover in with a blanket to keep it from making noise :)
(After I get batteries for the camera, I’ll make some pictures of it, it’s great.)

My old case will go to marla, I’ll just clean it up a bit, and will think about some more fans.

After that we went down in O!Shipka, where Zhoro (vortex) was celebrating his new job (and, according to babata, his birthday on the old-style date), with chervarium, babata, Zhoro Rusiychev (there are a lot of Zhoros) and microphobic. Followed eating (I haven’t eaten since the the small breakfast in the morning), drinking (which hit me in the head), and some rocking. With my last breath I got home, started the rest of the copying of the IDE drive (because it really insn’t too easy to move 130GB), and answered to a really big letter about the netsec course (who’s writing such things in saturday night, even I feel beat).

Не знам какво му имаше на деня, ама бях много отнесен…

Сутринта с Владо Каравелов замъкнахме машината ми до офиса му, и там цял ден правихме tuning, който се изразяваше с смяна на кутията с по-тиха, и смяна на двата ми диска (36G 10k оборотен SCSI и 160G IDE) с един 3ware RAID контролер и един 250G SATA диск (като е планирано да са два в RAID1). Сега не си чувам машината, още не мога да свикна… Даже не ми се налага да я завивам с одеялото, за да не ми шуми :)
(Ще си взема батерии за апарата, и ще я снимам, кутията е направо страхотна.)

Старата ми кутия е наследство за marla, само да я почистя малко, и да реша дали да и сложа още малко вентилатори.

След това отидохме с Владо долу в О!Шипка, където Жоро (vortex) празнуваше назначаването на новата работа (и според бабата – роженния си ден по стар стил), с червото, бабата, Жоро Русийчев (много Жоровци, много нещо) и microphobic. Последва ядене (бях закусил съвсем малко), пиене (което ме трясна в главата), и малко куфеене. С последни сили се добрах до вкъщи, пуснах да се довърши копирането на IDE диск-а (че не е особено бързо да се преместят 130GB), и отговорих на едно бая голямо писмо на тема курса по мрежова сигурност (кой пише такива неща в събота вечер, даже аз се чувствам скапан…).

Today my main task was moving old monitors and machines from one of the server rooms in FMI, to have some more space for the new FSA server (which I’ll probably call “Beast” or something, because it weights around 54 kg, and is 10U high).

Now, after the hard work and a nice dinner I’m lying with the notebook, watching Bebop with half eye, and Velin is snoing on the couch. Nice…

Днес основното ми занимание беше пренасяне на монитори и стари машини от една от сървърните зали на ФМИ, да има по-нормално място за новия сървър на ССС (който мисля да кръстя ‘Звяр’ или нещо подобно, понеже е около 54 кг, 10U машина).

Сега, след тежкия труд и прилична вечеря се излежавам с notebook-а, гледам с половин око Bebop, а Велин хърка на дивана. Идилия…

Today we gave a lot of the assignments for the course papers, and had the lecture on Unix security. It was ok, but a lot of people missed it, because there was a test for another course (a really bad coincidence).

Now with Velin we’re watching “Resident evil”. Classics.

Tomorrow we’ll be rearranging a machine room at FMI, it should be fun…

Днес раздадохме голямо количество от курсовите работи, и проведохме лекцията за Unix сигурност. Получи се горе-долу добре, но доста хора пропуснаха, понеже точно тогава единия поток имаше контролно (много неприятно съвпадение).

Сега с Велин гледаме пак “Resident evil”. Класика.

Утре ще се пренарежда една машинна зала във ФМИ, сигурно ще е бая забавно…

Last night I again felt too lazy to blog…

Through the day I worked a bit more on the howto, and in the evening I brought it to IBB. Some people had some remarks, on which I worked, but it’s really clear that I have a lot to add.

In the evening with Dani and Velin we watched “Die hard 3” (turned out that I hadn’t watched it, and the movie was pretty good).

In NANOG for second or third week there’s a discussion on IPv6 and the address and ASN allocations. Looking at it, we probably won’t see IPv6 soon, nobody likes the ideas that is has about routing (except the people that came with them).

Of course, life without crap won’t be the same – last night Screamer called me at some ungodly hour (I had forgotten to turn off the ringing) with some vague explanations and threats, which not only I didn’t understant (someone talked somebody about him, and he thinks that the someone is me), and only irritated me. How should one react to such SMS:
Mom4e ne me karai da te tyrsia i da se vidim na nepriatna sreshta
(Boy don’t make me look for you and to meet at an unpleasant meeting)
or to the similar messages in ICQ (not to speak about the tries to call me in 4 in the morning, which are probably against the law). I wonder if I should upload some logs with him, to be seen what a person he is.

Снощи пак ме мързеше да блогвам…

През дена поработих още малко върху howto-то, и вечерта го занесох на ИББ. Няколко човека имаха забележки, по които поработих, но много добре си личи, че има много за дописване.

Вечерта с Дани и Велин гледахме “Умирай трудно 3” (оказа се, че аз не съм го гледал, а филма се оказа всъщност добър)

В NANOG продължава вече втора или трета седмица разговора на тема IPv6 и раздаването на адреси и номера на автономни системи. По това, което гледам, май скоро IPv6 няма да видим, никой не харесва идеите, които има за routing-а (с изключение на тея, дето са ги измислили).

Разбира се, живота без простотии няма да е същия – снощи Screamer ми звъня по никое време (бях забравил да си спра звъненето) с някакви мъгляви обяснения и заплахи, които не само че не разбрах за какво са (май някой говорил на някой за него, и тоя първия някой трябва да съм аз), ами и основно ме издразниха. Как да реагира човек на следния SMS:
Mom4e ne me karai da te tyrsia i da se vidim na nepriatna sreshta
или на разните съобщения в ICQ в същия дух (да не говорим за опитите за звънене в 4 сутринта, които са направо незаконни). Чудя се да кача ли няколко лога с него, да се види що за човек е.

Last night I didn’t feel like writing, and the net connection had decided to die…

The day was ok – I finalized the agreement about FSA’s server to be co-located at FMI, the review of the tests passed (they turned to have errors in them). I started writing the personal co-lo howto, but it’s going ot be big :)

In the evening with Velin we discussed the rearranging of the house – tetris is a lot simpler that the thing we’re trying to do :) We’ll have to change the cabling, to arrange the machines in different way, in short, to make it look normal.

There’s the idea to make a site for donating mathoms to volunteers (e.g. old machines, that people are trying to get rid of) – Peio has one, Velin has 2-3, and I don’t doubt that a lot of people have some of this kind in their basement.
