I moved marla’s mailing list to zadnik.org, it was quick and painless…
The day was tiring, especially after getting up in the damn early morning, taking the printer back from maintenance (hurray, I’ll be able to waste paper and stop reading articles on the screen), and going through the whole damn construction exhibition in NDK, where I was looking for a holder for my monitor (I didn’t find one, and I’ll be ordering one on the net…)
For one day I almost doubled my friends list in orkut, I just saw how many people that I know showed in the last few weeks, the effect is somewhat avalanche-like…
There’s an interesting discussion in linux-kernel about the new raid, but I’m unable to comprehend it, and will probably look into it tomorrow morning…
For everyone having such machines, and using them as servers – there is a problem with the parallel port support for alpha in 2.4 kernels, my machine died twice with Aiee, killing interrupt handler, while I was trying to get cups to print with te printer, so I had to connect it to one of the windows machines, and to print from my cups on doom (and I can’t connect the printer to doom again, because it’s too noisy, and I won’t be keeping such thing in the room where I sleep).
(and ESR’s complaints of CUPS are a total nonsense, everything is easily done.)

Денят беше уморителен, особено след ставането в ранната сутрин, ходенето да си прибера ремонтирания принтер (ура, пак ще мога да хабя хартия и да не чета статии на екрана), и обиколката на цялата проклета строителна изложба в НДК, на която си търсих поставка за монитора (не намерих, и ще си поръчам по net-а …)
За един ден почти си удвоих friends списъка в orkut, просто открих колко хора са се появили в последно време, определено се пълни лавинообразно…
Има интересна дискусия в linux-kernel за новия raid, само дето аз не съм в състояние да я разбера, и сигурно ще я хвана утре сутрин …
За хората, които имат такива машини, и ги ползват за сървъри – има проблем с поддръжката на паралелен порт за alpha в 2.4 ядрата, на мен 2 пъти ми изгърмя с Aiee, killing interrupt handler моята, докато се опитвах да подкарам cups и самия принтер, та се наложи да закача принтера на едната windows машина, и да си печатам през моя cups на doom (а не мога пак да го закача на doom, щото никога няма да сложа нещо толкова шумно в стаята си).
(а оплакването на ESR от cups е тотално безпочвено. Всичко става адски лесно.)
Morning…
Yesterday was good, with discussions of the new project first with the client, then just me and chervarium, around midnight in “Krivoto”. There was one ugly moment, when somewhere at the end of the meeting I got the news that marla’s power supply died, and I had to call urgently my hardware supplied (who found a new PS in no time, thanks, Micrologix :) ), and to go to Lirex, where it turned out that they (still) don’t have 24h support, and there is nobody available that has keys to the facility … I made an appointment for 8:30 in the morning, which moved to 7:30, thanks to Petko Kolenichev, who showed there in the really early morning.
The replacement went pretty well, I changed the PS from one that’s 300W to one that’s 350W, and I hope it’ll survive the summer – there is a plenty of air conditioning, and a pretty good UPS power supply, so that shouldn’t be a problem. All this was over around 8:30, and I left, but forgot the old power supply there, so I have to go back there and get it one of these days, to return it to Micrologix (it’s under warranty)
I have to think about moving the mailing list about marla to some other machine, to be able to tell people about problems with her, without needing marla herself. If I see Velin online today (hey, you reading this?:) ), we’ll probably do something about it.

Вчерашния ден мина добре, с обсъждане на новия проект първо с клиента, после с chervarium, посред нощ в Кривото. Неприятния момент беше, когато се оказа някъде към края на срещата, че захранването на marla е гръмнало, и се наложи да се обадя до hardware доставчика си (които ми намериха ново за отрицателно време, благодаря на micrologix :) ), и да отида до Лирекс, където се оказа, че няма денонощен support, и няма никой с ключове, който да може да отвори… Направих си уговорка за 8:30 сутринта (която се премести в 7:30, благодаря на Петко Коленичев, че се появи там в много ранната сутрин).
Смяната на захранването мина много бързо, от 300W го смених с 350W, и се надявам да преживее това лято – там има достатъчно мощни климатици, и доста добро захранване, така че не трябва да е проблем. Цялата процедура завърши в около 8:30, и за капак на всичко забравих старото захранване там, та трябва да мина и да го взема тия дни, за да го върна в Micrologix (гаранционно е в крайна сметка).
Определено трябва да помисля за преместване на mailing листата за самата marla на някоя друга машина, за да мога да съобщавам за проблеми с нея, без да е нужно да е пусната. Ако издиря Велин днес (офлюх, четеш ли ?:) ), може и да се направи нещо.

Okay, there comments in the English version are working (after some serious fiddling), and there are RSS links in both languages. Next there is the RSS for the comments, and maybe the fonts ( Zhoro Chorbadzhijski complained today, at the Gnome meeting)
There were a lot of interesting events today, it began with a meeting to discuss a new project, which I and chervarium will design and probably deploy, with some thing like High Availability in it. We got the core stuff explained, and spoke for some other interesting things (the guy that’s using us in the project is one of the first unix guys in Bulgaria :) )
I got home, took some paper, pens and a board, sat in the armchair on the balcony, and wrote most of the core design, while the storm was coming (ok, not a big storm, just a lot of wind :) ). The combination of cold and humid air, the strong wind and the occasional thunders definitely helped to do the writing, someday I’ll probably find myself a place, where such storms are frequent :)
According to Murphy’s law it turned out that tomorrow we have to do another meeting, to finish discussing some details, this time with the client himself, to see what exactly are we going to do. I hope that there won’t be any stupid ideas like that it’s possible to build a plane from planks and duct tape….
I hope to resolve this quickly, to have time to work a bit more on the social network idea, there isn’t much left for the core document to be complete.
Of course, because of all this I totally forgot about the meeting about the Gnome birthday, which was at “Pri Kmeta” (“At the Mayor’s”), and I got called at about 21:00 to be asked why I’m not there… I got a cab and got there in no time :) Managed to see a lot of people, to talk about a lot of different things (and I’m putting a note here, I have to use the advices Peio gave me, about what to add in the social network document, I mustn’t forget :) ). I got few questions for Alexander Keremidarski (salle) to ask about mysql, and to see if I should change my opinion about it’s stability, there will be an interesting conversation next time…
And finally – does someone have ideas about what lecture should I be giving this year at the Linux Seminar? I have some ideas, but if someone has something really interesting, please tell me :)
Вече има коментари в английската версия (след сериозно бърникане), и има връзки за RSS и на 2та езика. Следва да оправя момента с RSS-а за коментарите, и може би шрифтовете (от които Жоро Чорбаджийски се оплака днес, на гномската сбирка).
Днес имах доста интересни преживявания, започна се със среща за обсъждане на един нов проект, който ще правим аз и chervarium, в който участват и неща като high-availability. В общи линии обсъдихме основните положения, поговорихме си за други интересни неща (човекът, който ни взема да участваме в проекта, е един от първите unix-аджии в България :) ).
Прибрах се, взех си листи, писците и една дъска, и се разположих във фотьойла на терасата, и написах основната част от нещата, докато идваше бурята (то не беше голяма буря де, само дето духа много :) ). Комбинацията от хладния и влажен въздух, силния вятър и откъслечните гръмотевици определено помогна за работата, някой ден сигурно ще си намеря място, където подобни бури са чести :)
По закон на Мърфи се оказа, че утре трябва да направим още една среща, за да дообсъдим още малко подробности, вече със самия клиент, за да видим какво точно ще става. Надявам се да няма много болни идеи от типа, че с дърво и тиксо може да се строят самолети…
Е, поне се надявам бързо да успея да оправя нещата, за да мога да поработя още малко в/у социалната мрежа, малко остава на основния документ да бъде завършен.
Разбира се, около тези работи тотално забравих за срещата по случай рождения ден на Gnome, която беше в ‘При Кмета’, и за която ми се обадиха по телефона около 21:00 да ме питат защо ме няма… Метнах се на едно такси, и пристигнах за нула време :) Успях да се видя с доста хора, да поговорим за най-различни неща (и си отбелязвам – Пейо ми даде няколко добри идеи какво да добавя в документа за социалната мрежа, не трябва да забравям :) ). Освен това, имам няколко въпроса, които да задам на Александър Керемидарски (salle) за mysql, и да видя дали не трябва да си променя донякъде мнението за стабилността й, ще има интересен разговор следващия път…
И като финално – някой да има идея за какво иска да говоря на Линукс семинара тази година? Аз имам една-две идеи, но ако някой се сети нещо много интересно, да казва :)
A day that passed in walks and thinking about the social network…
After writing version 5, I went to the network security lecture, and on the way an stupid problem occurred to me, one that I should’ve thought about – a group of determined people can evict anyone they want using signatures with negative level of trust, and their reasons can’t be easily verified (e.g. a ‘mob rule’). I have an idea how this can be fixed, but it’s not in the document right now, because I’m not really sure about it, and I’m publishing it here and in orkut, to see some comments.
4.6) Eviction/disconnected sets, dealing with spam
(if not noted otherwise, the following paragraphs are strictly
about users’ keys)
It’s something normal (although not very good) for a community to have
different sets within it, sometimes disconnected. This network is no
exception, and there’s the possibility to have no way to send messages
between two groups, if some signatures are revoked, or levels of trust
lowered, based on someone’s actions. This is possible if the group that’s
connected to the offending subnetwork revokes or lowers it’s trust for
all it’s members. This way you can establish a subnet, that can receive
read/check requests from the network, but won’t have anything accepted
(except revocations).
This creates a way to easily deal with spam, with isolating the
offending members. When the users understand the significance of their
recommendations/signatures, the problem will be even lower, because
it’ll be hard or impossible to get an offender to be trusted again.
Keys can still be validated through trackers’ keys, to ensure that
a request will be sent to the right person, that’s not in your subnet
of signatures. The decision about accepting such messages is left to
the user.
Another interesting event was receiving a question from an user from orkut about my blog, and about my RSS feed not working. I got that fixed some days ago, and still haven’t fixed the main page, but adding ?lang=en to the URL makes the RSS feed to be in English. There is another problem with the comments in the english version, which I’ll fixt in the next few days, when I get some time.
Today’s stats: 530 mails, 424 legal, and 106 identified as spam. I remember deleting about 2 or 3 spams manually. I like the result :)
(and the stupid russian spam isn’t going away …)

След като написах версия 5, и тръгнах към лекцията по мрежова сигурност, си намерих много глупав проблем, за който не знам защо не се бях сетил – пак важи момента, че някаква част от решени хора може чрез сигнатури с отрицателен Level of trust могат да гонят когото решат, и твърденията им ще бъдат сложни за проверка (т.нар. mob rule). За момента имам идея как това може да се реши по най-чистия начин, но понеже не съм напълно сигурен в решението, съм го пуснал в orkut, и ще го публикувам и тук (не ми се превежда от английски :) )

Друго интересно нещо беше, че получих въпрос от потребител в orkut на тема моя блог, и за това, че RSS-а ми не работел правилно. Това го оправих преди няколко дни, и така не съм го пипнал на главната страница, но добавката на ?lang=en прави RSS feed-а на английски. Има и проблем с коментарите в английската версия, който ще оправя тези дни, само да намеря малко време.
Статистика от пощата ми за днес: 530 писма, от тях 424 легални, и 106 отбелязани като спам. По мои спомени съм изтрил 2 или 3 спама на ръка. Резултата май почва да ми харесва:)

Today was spam fighting day – I made spamassassin more evil, and added sorbs lookup to postfix, so let’s see what else will those bastards do… There’ll be probably no more than 3-4 daily, which I’ll think about later (the biggest problem is with some russian spam, damn it).
I did a grep in the logs, today I received 474 mails (until now), of those 92 were identified as spam, and 382 were normal. I’ll do the same with tomorrow’s logs, to see what the result will be, with the improvements :)
Orkut definitely doesn’t sustain the load – I got ‘try again later’ or ‘service unavailable’ messages a lot today. There are about 150 000 members now, and that seems too much for them… (or their platform sucks, with that aspx, but because I don’t have enough data, I won’t talk bullshit :) )
My mom’s coming and the freeing of the couch helped me get to the conclusion, that I can use one of the boxes from the UPS to put my monitor on it, and it’s pretty comfy… There isn’t a lot of place for the mouse, but I don’t need it, that’s why I use one with ball – I can use the inertia (and everybody, who uses optical mouses – suffer, I don’t need to make my mouse resolution high as the sky to not need to move my whole arm).
In the end it’ll probably turn out that chervarium isn’t right about the encryption speed of asymmetric algorithms – the first experiment, with gpg on text and binary file gave some pleasant results – 4 seconds for 80MB (contents-i386 from debian), and aroung 52 seconds on 111MB .avi. I find it satisfying, although I’m not that sure that it doesn’t generate a symmetric key, encrypts it with the public key, and then encrypts all the rest with the symmetric key, but in the end that’s a good idea, too :)
One very amusing thing was setting up cyrillic support on the alpha machine – it’s a X server, and connects to doom to a gdm session. Experimenting in terminal with xmodmap and setxkbmap wasn’t what should be expected, I wasn’t on the right machine, so I played a bit more with the XF86Config file, and it worked finally :)
(and I’m thinking about going earlier to bed, to be able to get up fresh, not like this morning :) )
Днес беше ден за борба със спама – хванах се, озлобих допълнително spamassassin-а, и добавих sorbs lookup в postfix-а, е сега да ги видя какво ще правят… Ще останат сигурно не повече от 3-4 на ден, които ще ги мисля допълнително (най-големия проблем е някакъв руски спам, дяволите да го вземат…).
Направих един grep в логовете, за днес имам 474 пощи (до момента), от тях 92 хванати като спам, и 382 нормални. Ще е интересно за утрешния ден какъв ще е резултата, със допълнителното озлобяване :)
Orkut определено не издържат на натоварването – доста често ми даваше ‘опитай пак’ или ‘service unavailable’. Хората там са станали 150 000, и изглежда им идват в повече… (или платформата им е куца, с тоя aspx, но поради липса на информация няма да говоря простотии по въпроса :) )
С идването на майка ми и освобождаването на кушетката се стигна до извода, че мога да използвам единия от кашоните от UPS-а да си кача монитора, и се оказва много удобно… само няма много място за мишката, но не ми и трябва, аз за това си ползвам такава с топче – почти никакво място не ми трябва, ако се възползвам правилно от инерцията (и всички, които ползват оптични мишки, да страдат, с тази не ми се налага да си вдигам разделителната способност на мишката до смърт, за да мога да не си местя цялата ръка).
Може би ще се окаже, че chervarium не е много прав за скоростта на криптиране със асиметрични алгоритми – първият експеримент, с gpg на текстов и на бинарен файл даде приятни резултати – 4 секунди за 80 мегабайта (contents-i386 от debian), и около 52 секунди на 111 мегабайтово avi. На мен поне ми се вижда прилично като резултат, въпреки че не съм напълно сигурен дали не генерира симетричен ключ, не го криптира с публичния, и не криптира останалото със симетричния, но в крайна сметка и това е добра идея… :)
Незабравимо беше и подкарването на кирилицата на alpha-та, която си има X сървър, и се закача към gdm сесия на doom. Експериментите в терминал с xmodmap и setxkbmap не се оказаха успешни, просто защото не бях на правилната машина, така че си поиграх просто малко повече с XF86Config-а, и проработи :)

I’ve caught cold some time in the last 2 days, it looks like that the sleeping with an open window still isn’t a good idea, not to mention going out for some beers (and juice :) ) in the South park (no connection with the serial :) ). The lack of alcohol looks like is making me colder, and I’m like trying to cough my lungs out. I’m lying in bed, and drinking hot tea…
I finished some of the things about social networks, and wrote some replies in orkut (especially to a sociologist, that apparently had decided that my study was something horrible, and had to find a way to make me stop, like with telling me that I know nothing… (and I already know that :) ) )
The anime maniacs have found some really funny anime music videos, which deserve seeing, and here’s link to one of them:the first one (death metal and childish anime :) ). It’s accessible only from Bulgaria, if someone else is interested, drop me a note, and I’ll find a way :)
We went out to drink with joejoe, Zhoro Ruschiyski(how was that spelled) and his roommate, and talked about interesting things, like the weird spanning tree protocols, organizational structures, laptops, etc, etc… They went to Zhoro to finish drinking, and I went home, because of my cold…
Tomorrow my mother will be visiting, which means that I have to put my machine on the floor, and to free the couch, so she has a place to sleep… And we’ll see if she could convince me not to keep the machine in my room (which is practically improbable :) )
Успял съм да настина по някое време през предните 2 дни, изглежда спането на отворен прозорец още не се препоръчва, да не говорим за ходенето да се пие бира (и безалкохолно :) ) в Южния парк… Липсата на алкохол изглежда се отразява охлаждащо на тялото ми, в момента имам гадна кашлица, и пия горещ чай…
В общи линии довърших няколко неща около социалните мрежи, пописах в orkut отговори (особено на един социолог, който изглежда беше решил, че моите занимания са нещо ужасно, и трябва да намери начин да ме откаже, като ми обясни как нищо не разбирам… Ама аз това си го знам :) ).
Аниме маниаците са намерили няколко адски смешни видео клипа, които си заслужават да се видят, за един ще пусна връзка и тук:Първи (death metal и детско anime :) ). Видимо е само от България, ако някой навън се интересува, да пише, ще се измисли нещо :)
Ходихме с joejoe, Жоро Русчийски (това така ли се пишеше…) и съквартиранта му да пием навън, и си говорихме за интересни неща, за разните извратени spanning tree протоколи, за организационни структури, за лаптопи, и какво ли не още… Те отидоха да си допиват, а аз се прибрах, понеже съм адски настинал…
Утре ми идва на гости майка ми, което значи, че ще трябва да си сваля машината на пода, и да освободя кушетката, за да има къде да спи … И да видим дали ще ме убеди да не си държа машината в стаята (което е адски малко вероятно :) )
I finally finished reading “American Gods”, a great book… If I was still drinking, after this I whould’ve taken a random bottle and would just drink for some time :) Really deserves reading, and to be fair, after what I’ve read by Neil Gaiman (one book with Terry Pratchett, “Good Omens”, and another one which title I can’t remember, but wasn’t really good), I didn’t expect something so good and with such influence. May be some bookreader that’s more obsessed than me can find some banal elements, but in my opinion it’s just great. I recommend it to everyone that likes fantasy and Steven King, to me it looks like a very interesting combination between them.
I got some time after the book, and I had some time to expand https://vasil.ludost.net/pisaniq/sn_wot/sn_wot.txt , which is starting to get into shape, just a little more, and I’ll be able to start designing the data format (I still have some unidentified things, like how exactly I’ll make the signatures, so there won’t be a compatibility problem between different architectures), and to start testing how slow exactly are the asymmetric cryptography algorithms. According to chervarium, the idea to sing and encrypt with these is pretty bad, just because it will be damn slow, but I don’t trust something like this until I test it… In the end, there is the Moore’s law, there are fast enough processors…
(short clarification, at https://vasil.ludost.net/pisaniq/sn_wot/ can be seen all the versions until now, with diffs between them, for move convenient tracking. I’m thinking about putting a version in the beginning of the document, but I’ll wait for that…)
It’s important to note, that the discussions in orkut are helping the development, it’s interesting to see everything from someone else’s point of view, and to hear others’ ideas… Also, the people who don’t understand some idea, are helping me to clarify it :)
And, of course, I just can’t just not mention Bine, which inspired me to do this :)
Успях да прочета “Американски богове”, настина страхотна книга… Ако пиех, след нея щях да хвана някоя произволна бутилка, и просто да пия известно време :) Наистина си струва да се прочете, а и честно казано, след това, което съм чел за момента на Геймън (една книга с Пратчет, “Добрите поличби”, и още една, чието заглавие не мога да си спомня, но не беше особено добра), не очаквах нещо толкова силно и въздействащо… Сигурно някой по-побъркан книгочетец може да намери някои банални елементи, но поне според мен книгата е наистина много добра. Препоръчвам я на всички, които обичат фентъзи и Стивън Кинг, поне на мен ми прилича на много интересна кръстоска м/у двете.
От четенето ми остана малко време да допълня https://vasil.ludost.net/pisaniq/sn_wot/sn_wot.txt , което започва да придобива интересен вид, още малко, и ще мога да се заема с описването на формата на данните (имам няколко неизвестни неща, например как точно ще направя подписите, т.е. как точно ще структурирам данните, така че да няма проблем със съвместимостта при различни архитектури), и да започна да тествам колко бавни всъщност са асиметричните алгоритми. Поне според chervarium идеята да подписвам и криптирам с тези алгоритми би била много лоша, просто защото ще е адски бавно, само дето аз не вярвам, докато не пробвам… В крайна сметка, има закон на Мур, има бързи процесори….
(кратко уточнение, на https://vasil.ludost.net/pisaniq/sn_wot/ могат да се видят всички версии досега, заедно с diff-ове между тях, за по-удобно следене. Не знам дали да сложа и в началото на документа една версия, но май за момента ще почакам…)
Важно е и да спомена, че дискусиите в orkut доста помагат на разработката, интересно е да се видят нещата от нечия чужда гледна точка, и да се чуят чуждите идеи … Също така хората, които не разбират някоя идея, помагат с това, че правя документа по-лесно четим :)
И разбира се, не мога да не спомена Bine, която ме вдъхнови да се занимая с това :)
I shouldn’t have slept this afternoon, especially after reading book like “American Gods”.
I had my craziest and creepiest for the last X(X>8) years, which included my dead grandmother and grandfather (may they rest in peace), which were brought back to life by my mother… and there was something really weird there…., also, chervaium was in the dream, and some city, which was partly Sofia, had a unbelievable fog, at least when I was walking through it (the clocks I saw were showing something like 33). And for a finishing hatch – there was a playground, which was combined with a railway station, and around the actual playground there were railings, and trains on them.
May be it’s better that I can’t remember the details :) Looks like that stopping the alcohol has a lot of strange consequences for me. I’m definitely not sleeping in the afternoon this way.

които видях показваха около 33). И като завършващ щрих – имаше някакви игрище, което се комбинираше с гара, и около мястото за игра (на дявол знае какво) имаше релси, и по тях вървяха влакове…
Май ми е по-добре, че не помня подробностите :) Изглежда, спирането на алкохола има много странни последици върху психиката ми … Определено няма да спя повече по тоя начин следобед.
(а каква е тая сбъркана жега днеска, какво му става на времето…)
Again a long day…
After reading the huge pile of mail that was accumulated, I started reading “American Gods”, but got nowhere – first there came the itch to write down my idea for a social network ( which can be found here , and is a bit unfinished), and then I found out that desync came back from Israel, and we went to get breakfast. He had an interesting stories to tell, like how half of the population there is from Russian origin :)
I continued to write the idea, and then went to Krivoto, where I met chervarium and AvatarBG, who just came back for a few weeks from Germany. For about 1-2 hours they managed to almost kill me with linguistic discussions, I’ve forgotten how long can they talk about similarities and differences between languages, the types of swears, or about oddities… Thank god, we spoke about other things, too :)
Looks like the social network is going to become a serious projects, not like some of my other ideas… It’s really interesting, and I can see how it can happen, without serious problems – the infrastructure is tested already, in pieces at different applications, the only thing left is to verify if they will combine right, which sounds really probable to me.
