I feel squeezed out. I had to deal today with three or four critical situations, and at the end of the day two were in parallel… And all of them were ugly enough so I had to take care.

I want to sleep.

It’s really great that I have nothing to do for OpenFest this year, I couldn’t have survived. I’ll just go, attend a few lectures, see some people and will drink quietly.

Чувствам се изстискан. Днес се оправях с три-четири инфарктни ситуации, като на края на деня две вървяха паралелно… И всички бяха достатъчно гадни, та да няма кой друг да се занимае с тях.

Искам да спя.

Добре, че нямам никакво участие в OpenFest тая година, май нямаше да издържа. Сега просто ще ида, ще послушам някоя друга лекция, ще се видя с разни хора и ще си пия кротко.

I wanted to write this in the last few months, but it became really on-topic after the dCAP certification.

My idea is that there’s no point in studying for exams, because that makes the results from the exam meaningless.

As some historical data – all the exams and such that I’ve been to and that I would accept as a grade for myself were in a normal or sub-normal condition and with no preparations. For example I took LPI201 with a hangover, three hours of sleep, probably still a bit drunk and before that I had to fix some stuff with the video streaming of the seminar, LPI202 was on the second day of an Openfest where I had to present lectures and be in the organization, dCAP – with jet lag, underslept, with some cold and maybe with a bit of drinking.
(and I don’t even want to remember the stuff at the university)
(the final math exams in high school I took with no preparation for two of the four hours and had to run to fix a dead server…)

The result obtained this way is real. Everyone can just memorize the material, to take the exam or whatever and then to forget it – this is not a real grade, but that’s just a way around the system. It’s also a part of the reason for the real meaning of the university diplomas to be just that the person could live 4-5 years being made to deal with crap and managed to go through, but nothing more – you can’t say if he liked it or can apply it, or the abilities to think, etc..
(not to mention the Bulgarian ones, where the diplomas mean even less)

If someday I decide to do a real course in system administration, the exam will be one evening drinking and on the next day the students will be given two racks of equipment, parts of which don’t work, tons of cables, eternal connections, a bit of spare hardware and 30-40 pages of documentation that has the looks of having survived a tornado, after which they’ll have to make it work as before.
(I might even add a few tapes of backup with hard-to-find reader)

Maybe there can be an exception for the really hard exams, like CCIE (or somewhat dCAP) – where if you can make the practical part in the alloted time, then you can handle almost everything in the real world. Most exams are not like this and can be passed with just memorizing (for example, for me CCNA would have a meaning if they were given 10 minutes instead of 30-60).

Of course, there’s also the question on how can you learn enough to be able to take exams in this way. I have always preferred the practical way, learning on the backs of the users, but it’s a bit hard to find such a place :)

Това се каня да го напиша от едно известно време, след dcap сертификацията си мисля, че е крайно време.

Идеята ми е, че няма смисъл да се учи за изпити, понеже това прави резултата от изпита безсмислен.

Като малко предварителна история – всичките изпити и подобни явления, на които съм бил и които реално бих приел като оценка за мен са правени в някакво нормално състояние, без подготовка и в доста случаи – в под-оптимално състояние. Например LPI201 го взех с махмурлук, недоспиване, още май леко пиян и преди това трябваше да оправя видео предаването на семинара, LPI202 втория ден на един openfest на който трябваше да водя лекция и да участвам в организацията, dCAP-а – с jet lag, постоянно ненаспал се, настинал и май леко пил.
(изобщо не ми се мисли за разните изпити в университета)
(а матурата си по математика взех за два часа и изчезнах да оправям един гръмнал сървър… За нея па хептен не се бях готвил)

По този начин получения резултат показва истинските възможности на човека. Всеки може да зазубри материала, да вземе изпита за какво ли не, след което да го забрави – това не е реална оценка, а заобикаляне на системата. Това е и част от причината, че реално погледнато една университетска диплома просто казва, че човека е изтраял 4-5 години да го занимават с разни работи и е добутал, но нищо повече – не се казва дали е харесвал това, което учи, дали наистина го знае и може да го прилага, дали изобщо може да мисли и т.н..
(тук не говорим за българските университети, където дипломата в повечето случаи и това не значи)

Ако някой ден например реша да направя истински курс по системна администрация, изпита ще е една вечер пиене и на следващия ден студентите да им се дадат два rack-а техника, части от които не работят, кило кабели, външни връзки, малко резервен хардуер и 30-40 страници документация, кяото изглежда като минала през торнадо, след което да трябва да я подкарат да работи както е била преди.
(може да се смиля и да им оставя една-две касетки лента с backup-и, за които да се чудят отде да намерят лентово устройство).

Може да се направи изключение за изключително трудните изпити, като например CCIE (донякъде и dCAP) – ако можеш да направиш практическата част в нужното време, то това в общи линии значи, че можеш да правиш и почти всичките реални нужни setup-и. Повечето изпити обаче просто не са такива и могат да се минат със зубрене (за мен например CCNA би имал смисъл, ако се даваха по 10 минути вместо 30-60).

Разбира се, остава въпроса как точно човек може да придобие нужните знания и способности, за да може да взема така изпити. Аз винаги съм препоръчвал практическия опит и да се учиш на гърба на user-ите, само трябва да се намери подходящо място за целта :)

Last night because I have some empty spaces in my head I sat and upgraded my laptop to Intrepid Ibex (the next ubuntu, which gets finalised on the 30th). The result was about half an hour making X work, fighting a ton of crap and for the half of the next day running most of the work stuff on a remote X server while reconfiguring the laptop.

So I’m officially the 1324th dCAP certified :) I’m waiting to receive my stuff over the mail.

I finished reading the last book by Lukyanenko published here (“Cold toys are the stars”) in one go, pretty nice book, with a weird mix with the world of the progressors and strangers by the Strugatski brothers.
(which reminds me that I’m reading the newly published book by Boris Strugatski, “The powerless in this world”, the beginning is promising).

Openfest is coming, and I still have no idea if I’ll be doing a lecture.

Снощи поради наличие на празноти в главата си седнах и си upgrade-нах машината до Intrepid Ibex (следващото Ubuntu, дето се финализира на 30ти). Резултатът беше около половин час пускане на X, борба с кило простотии и половината от деня пускане на основните неща remote на един друг X сървър, докато си трошах лаптопа.

Изчетох новата излязла книга на Лукяненко (“Студени играчки са звездите”) на един дъх, доста приятна книга, със странно смесване със света на прогресорите и странниците на братя Стругацки.
(което ми напомня, че сега чета новата излязла книга на Борис Стругацки, “Безсилните на този свят”, започва обещаващо).

Идва openfest, а аз още идея си нямам дали ще водя лекции.

I love debugging. On my grave (if I have one, I think I’ll donate my body to the medical faculty of the Sofia University) they might write exactly that (although some time ago chervarium found a weird meaning of “bugger” and turned out that debugger can be translated as “one that removes homosexuals”).
(and “bugger” was coming from Bulgarian/Bogomil, they were accused of homosexual practices and it left traces in the language, if you don’t believe me – check the notes at the end of this)

So today Velin called me at some point, offering me to go to dinner and drinks with him, iffi and Eli somewhere in Studentskig rad. I declined rather rude – I had to port a pretty big and weird piece of code from asterisk 1.2 to 1.4, and tsting it decided a specific environment – some of the problems I hit you couldn’t really simulate in my test setup (something should be done about this). I also found some new details about the API, which I definitely could live without.
(and I shouldn’t be given to write code. To patch – OK, but that’s it)

(And it’s wonderful that women are such strange creatures and there’s a lot to debug – otherwise I would find them boring and the sex maybe wouldn’t be that interesting…)

So in the end everything worked at about 20:00 (all tests passed, there were some weird looks from some colleagues while I was having a handset to each of my ears and going “Ommmmmmm” (because “allo” gets really old really fast)), drank a bit from the flat bottle that I carry with me and went happy home.

(Finished watching Coupling, the last episode is a bit too sentimental at the end, but the rest is great)
(Environments II turned out to be music that is useful background for work – this is a bit rare)

Много обичам да дебъгвам. На гроба ми (ако ми направят такъв, мисля да си даря трупа на медицинския факултет на СУ) може да напишат точно това (въпреки че наскоро червото откри странно значение на bugger и се оказа, че debugger може буквално да се преведе като “обезпедерастител”).
(а bugger идвало от българин/богомил, те били обвинявани, че са хомосексуални и от там останало едно такова значение, ако не вярвате – вижте на това бележката най-отдолу)

Днес така ми се обади Велин по някое време, с предложението с iffi и Ели да ходим да ядем/пием нейде в студентски град. Отказах бая грубо – налагаше ми се да port-на едно прилично голямо и странно парче код от asterisk 1.2 до 1.4, а тестването му изискваше специфична среда – някои от проблемите, в които се набих, нямаше как да ги симулирам в моята тестова постановка (трябва да направя нещо по въпроса). Определено открих нови и странни съобщения за грешка и научих подробности за API-то, без които определено бих могъл да живея…
(не трябва да ми се дава да пиша код. Да patch-вам – може, ама толкова)

(Колко е хубаво, че жените са такива странни създания и има какво да им се дебъгва – иначе щяха да са ми скучни и сигурно и секса нямаше да ми е толкова интересен…)

В крайна сметка всичко тръгна към 20:00 (минаха всички тестове, имаше забавни погледи от колегите, докато си държах по една слушалка от двете страни на главата и казвах “Омммммммммм” (просто защото “ало” омръзва)), пийнах си малко от плоската бутилка, дето си нося и щастлив се прибрах.

(Догледах си Coupling, последния епизод е малко лигав към края, но иначе е супер)
(Environments II се оказа музика, на която може да се работи – това поне аз много рядко го срещам)

Some more fun things…

A girl introduced me to Korai Orom (the ‘o’s are with two dots on top of them), a weird psychedelic electronic stuff from Hungary. I wrote them to ask where can I buy their CDs and they answered (in Bulgarian!:) ) – we have no idea, but you can buy the music at Songs.hu … And Songs.hu turned out to be a pretty nice place, working perfectly and having the stuff in FLAC format (as it should be :) ).

Future Sound of London have released a new album in the last months – Environments II, from which I’ve heard the first three pieces and I definitely need to devote a hour to it in the dark with the good headphones. It’s rumored that they’ve gone to the old style with the dark ambient stuff, has to be checked.
